Stories & Tales

From Montana

Hello from MT.  We have lots of snow this year.  Most of the rivers in the west will be out for the next month or so.  The news is talking about major floading.  Should be interesting.  This could mean we might have an August this year.

I've been exploring some sloughs on the Flathead River and have had great pike fishing.  Lots of fun on the fly!!
Anyway, just wanted to send a shout out to see if anybody has any fishing plans.
Take care, Jason

From Nebraska

I can't remember the details except that we caught it in April of the mid 1990s at a private pond.  We didn't have a camera in the boat, but we did in my car on the shore.  We had saved the smaller crappie in the live well (caught by my friend Andy) to bring to shore to photograph.  I still had a minnow on my line so we waited until I caught a fish before going to shore for the picture.  Andy, my fishing partner told me "you'll never catch a fish with your minnow so close to the surface" (it was about 12" to 16" below my bobber in about 10' of water).  Next thing my bobber went straight down, not the typical initial bob-hit that you get with a crappie.  After some work the fish came up sideways like a halibut, I saw the huge slab and I knew that I had something special.  We immediately landed the fish, put it in the livewell and went to shore for pictures, then we released both fish back into the lake.  It wasn't until a day or two later that we discovered we'd potentially released a state record back into the lake, but the decision was easy because we didn't have adequate cooler space to keep it alive long enough for proper certification and she was completely full of eggs.  We did measure the fish at a full 18 3/4" though we did not weigh her as it seemed unnecessary and overly time consuming at the time.

Here some old pictures I found doing some digging through a bunch of old stuff the neighbor through out. Imagine what's behind these old pictures!
